People thinking about certification usually have the same practical questions. The answers below come from NAVBA's exam pages. Details can change, so confirm them on the certification page and the page for the specific exam before you register.
What exams are offered?
NAVBA offers certification as a Bankruptcy Petition SpecialistTM, in partnership with 713 Training:
- Chapter 7 certification, the foundation exam.
- Chapter 13 certification, the advanced exam.
- Chapter 7 & 13 certification, both together at a better value.
Is certification required?
No. Certification is optional. It is a way to show attorneys, employers and clients that you have been tested on drafting accurate petitions, and it can help whether you want to work as a bankruptcy assistant, legal assistant, paralegal, Virtual Bankruptcy Assistant or petition preparer. For a broader view, see what certification shows attorneys and how to prepare.
Is the exam open-book?
Yes. The exams are taken online and are open-book. They are based on 713 Training course materials, which means that familiarity with the training matters more than memorizing facts.
What is the passing score?
A passing grade of 80% is required.
How long do I have to finish?
For the Chapter 7 exam, you must complete all sections within 30 days of registering and starting the first section. An exam that is not completed within 30 days results in a failing score. The exam pages give the details for each exam, so check the one you plan to take.
Can I take it in more than one session?
Yes. You do not need to finish all the quizzes in one sitting. Once you start an individual quiz, however, you must finish it before closing.
What if I fail?
You may retake an exam one additional time. A mandatory 30-day waiting period applies between attempts, with no exceptions. With only one retake available, it makes sense to prepare thoroughly for the first attempt.
What do I need to take the exam?
A computer with an internet connection and a web browser, plus bankruptcy software such as Best Case Bankruptcy installed.
Can I skip the course and just take the exam?
Technically you can register, but the exam is based on the 713 Training course materials, so those who attempt it without completing the course first are not likely to pass. Treat the training as your preparation. For a plan of attack, our article on how to prepare is a good starting point, and the training page describes the courses.
I am already enrolled in a 713 Training course. Do I need to buy the exam?
Students enrolled in the Chapter 7 Mastery Course or the Chapter 7 & 13 Mastery Course receive one Chapter 7 exam registration with enrollment, according to the exam page. Contact us to confirm your eligibility before purchasing.
How do I register?
Use the "Contact Us to Register" button on the exam page, or go to the contact page. Current pricing is shown on the certification page.
Will certification get me work?
Certification helps you show your skill, but it does not guarantee clients, and attorneys also look at experience, references, turnaround and communication. Pair it with a membership that puts you in front of attorneys: every NAVBA membership includes a listing in the directory. Join NAVBA to get listed.
